CBD Bioavailability

In the majority of CBD products, most of the CBD that you consume is destroyed way before it reaches your bloodstream.  The remaining CBD that survives and is utilised is called bioavailability. This will increase or decrease depending on how you take it.

What is bioavailability?

Bioavailability refers to the amount of active ingredient that reaches your bloodstream after you have consumed it.  After you have absorbed the ingredient, it will then be transported around your body and used in your cells and tissues.

The bioavailability also depends on the type of product you are using and how you have consumed it.  For example, if you injected the CBD directly into your blood vessels, the bioavailability would certainly be 100%.  However, the majority of CBD products are taken in the form of a liquid or sweet.

These methods would take longer for the CBD to reach your blood, in turn, resulting in a lower amount surviving the journey.

Please note, we would never recommend injecting CBD under any circumstances, and only encourage oral consumption at all times.

Bioavailability in various CBD products

There are so many CBD products available as they have become increasingly popular.  The most common form of consumption is eating, inhaled, absorbed under your tongue or applied directly to your skin.

Each method will transport the CBD into your body, but at different rates. Everybody is different, and the percentage of what to consume will vary from one person to another.

CBD drinks and edibles

Like any food you eat, the CBD will need to pass through your digestive system and also your liver. CBD products come in the form of capsules, drinks and edibles.

CBD drops

By placing CBD oil under your tongue, will allow quicker absorption directly into the blood vessels.  By consuming your CBD this way, you are avoiding it from being broken down in your digestive system.  Bioavailability will be significantly better than if you simply swallow it.

Vaporised or inhaled CBD

Vape oils are becoming increasingly popular.  The liquid in the vaporiser turns into droplets and is inhaled and cross the thin mucus membrane into your lung’s blood supply.

Your lungs have a large surface area of up to 75 square metres.

This makes the process of absorption much quicker.  Blood passes through your lungs, picks up the CBD, travels to the heart and then continues the journey around your body before passing the liver.

Rubbing CBD directly on the skin

CBD can be rubbed into your skin if you are aiming to target a specific area.  It will reach your bloodstream, but it is likely that small amounts will be absorbed.

Conclusion

CBD oil effects people in different ways.  Understanding bioavailability will help you decide on the percentage of CBD and the method you choose to take it.  Impact Sports recommends you do some research beforehand, and decide what you think is best for you.
