CBD in the Olympics

2020 was a year for the record books in many ways. Had the Summer Olympics taken place in Japan last year, it would have marked the first legal use of CBD in the series of international sporting events. In January 2020, the World Anti-Doping Agency, better known as WADA, added CBD to the approved list of supplements.

CBD & the World Anti-Doping Agency

WADA allowing CBD is huge. The agency is in charge of all supplements and illegal substances for international sports. WADA lists CBD information under cannabinoids, where they clearly state that THC is 100% prohibited.

“CBD is not prohibited; however, athletes should be aware that some CBD oils and tinctures extracted from cannabis plants, may also contain THC and other cannabinoids that could result in a positive test for a prohibited cannabinoid.”

Most countries follow WADA’s recommendations when developing their own guidelines, including the UK Anti-Doping agency, UKAD.

“CBD is not currently listed on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Prohibited List, and so is permitted to use in sport. All other cannabinoids (including, but not limited to, cannabis, hashish, marijuana, and THC) are prohibited in-competition.”

Professional Athletes that use CBD

Many current and retired pro players are using the hemp extract in the UK and around the world.

  • Derrick Morgan, US NFL linebacker
  • Megan Rapinoe, US FIFA Soccer champion
  • Ben Franks, former rugby player
  • Jordan Vucenic, MMA fighter

This list isn’t even close to extensive. After WADA changed their stance on CBD in 2018, athletes on many levels started using CBD to their wellness routine. There isn’t one specific product consumers are using more than others.

In fact, many are adding multiple items to their must-have lists, such as tinctures, mints, and various muscle and body creams infused with the hemp extract. Each product and formula has a unique set of uses that can fit into any fit lifestyle.

Ensuring Safe CBD Use for Olympians

While CBD may be in the green zone, THC, the psychoactive component found in small quantities in hemp is strictly prohibited. Even a tiny amount can disqualify an athlete. UK hemp products are allowed to have up to 0.2% THC because it’s not enough to cause a high. The only way to be 100% sure is to use a broad-spectrum or isolate, which removes the THC.

Many of IMPACT Sports CBD products understand the challenge athletes face. They want to use CBD but don’t want to face disqualification because of a tiny amount of THC. By removing the THC and keeping the CBD, you can have the best of both worlds.

You don’t have to be an Olympic medalist to use a CBD fitness supplement. IMPACT Sports offers several athletic-grade products anyone can use to pamper their bodies after a challenging workout or a long workday. Add one or more items to your dresser top, shower, and gym bag to improve your day.
